Lost in the Details?

We've been talking a lot in our Relief Society meetings about something that Sister Beck said - that the single most important thing we can learn is to learn how to listen to the Spirit. I've been trying to take more opportunities to talk to my kids about what that means and how it feels.

Tonight I told them, each separately about an experience I had as a missionary as part of their bedtime stories. I was in a new city and I was re-learning to ride a bike. My companion was a lot faster (and a foot taller). We were going from one appointment to another and we were in a hurry. It was late and dark. I think I'd been to our destination once before and had a hazy idea of where we were going. Something slowed me up even more and I got too far behind. I was lost and alone. I prayed and followed a prompting to go a certain direction. It was the wrong direction, but my companion also had a prompting to go the wrong direction - we found that it was the quickest route for us to reconnect. I told the boys that when they feel lost and alone they can pray and the Holy Ghost will help them like He did for me.

Jackson's response was: why didn't you drive the car?

Lincoln's response was: I think I could've ridden my bike as fast as that girl and never got lost.

Is it Summer?

I've been talking to the boys for a long time about the things we're going to do "when it's summer." They have been asking for weeks, maybe months... "is it summer today?" Once I finally said yes, Jackson thought we were going to do our whole summer list in one day.

We've had some great summer moments, but have been slowed a little by a fussy baby this week. Today I nicknamed him Pro-fusser Harrison. I thought at first that he might be teething (which I still believe because I can see both of his bottom teeth coming), but today it seemed like something more, so I took him to the doctor and she confirmed an ear infection. Hopefully he'll be all happy (and sleeping!) again soon. While I've spent a lot of time taking care of him the older two created their own project. They made big paper "monsters" and taped them to the front and back doors to ward off intruders. They just might start up their own home security business. Today they also tested out a karate place near our house and we're considering getting them involved with that in some form.

During a brief smiling moment we dressed Harrison up as a Jedi in training. Guess whose idea that was!

Helper

The other day I told Lincoln that I had a lot of things I had to do before we did fun things. The list started with a shower and folding laundry. While I was in the shower he "folded" a few things and set them on the rug for me. He told me to be careful when I got out because he had folded some clothes and put them there. I guess three things was his limit. He told me I could do the rest. I thought it was a sweet try.
