Tuesday we kept Hunter while Aimee was away at Girl's camp. He was so fun to have around!
That evening we went over to Grandma's for dinner and got the kayak out. It had been a couple of years since we had gotten the boat out and we all really enjoyed it. It was our first time to do it without Grandpa and he was very missed.
While we were putting the boat away this tiny baby praying mantis landed on me. We were good friends for a long while.
On Thursday around lunch time I noticed a brand new calf in the field behind us that was alone and sticking near the fence. I wasn't sure if he was hurt or tangled or what, but I was worried about him. I saw him again around 5pm still alone in the same spot. There was another woman who had pulled over to check on him and we went together to talk to the farmers about him. No one answered and we were worried about trespassing if we went to check on him ourselves. Jeff was on his way home and I talked to him about it. He said he would go over with me and check on him. I stirred the ground beef for our dinner while I talked with him over the phone and worried about the calf. The irony was not lost on me.
When he got home we went over and found a lady feeding some other calves in the barn. She said that she had seen the calf, but she was alone for the day and couldn't get him by herself. We offered to help and she took us out into the field in a small tractor trailer. I sat in the back with some hay and we bounced around the muddy field over to the calf. It kept trying to get into the neighbor's field thinking that his mother was over there. Jeff hopped out and chased it while we chased it with the tractor trying to get it over by the other cows. He was so worn out, but kept trying to get back to the fence. We got stuck in the mud, so we hopped out and Jeff managed to get the calf on the rope. He carried it into the pens (newborn calves are not light!). We had a fun time playing cowboys for the afternoon.
A friend of mine has started a group and organized "Fun Friday's" for the whole summer. The first one this week was at Auntie Ann's Pretzels at the mall. We joined about 30 other people in the back room where each kid got to make their own pretzel. It was a touch crowded back there, but so fun. After they twisted their pretzel we went out to the lobby where we waited while they baked. Harrison was entertained by going up and down the escalator repeatedly. The mall is a new concept to him as I tend to avoid it - so he was fascinated with how many stores were in one place and all of the things you could buy there.
